Eighth Graders Choose Classes for their Freshman Year

The transition from junior high to high school happens quickly, and Hillsboro School District is committed to making the process clear and stress-free for students and families.

Recently, Hillsboro High School counselors visited the junior high to meet with eighth-grade students and help them begin planning their freshman year schedules. During the visit, counselors explained graduation requirements and introduced students to the wide variety of academic and elective courses offered at the high school.

Incoming freshmen are guided through required core classes and then select their preferred elective courses. Popular electives such as Agriculture, Strength & Conditioning, and Family & Consumer Sciences (FACS) often fill quickly. If a student is unable to enroll in a desired elective during their freshman year, they will receive increased priority in future years.

Counselors also work closely with students to discuss grades, postsecondary plans, career interests, and long-term goals. These conversations help ensure each student’s high school course plan supports their individual path toward graduation and life after high school.
