Hillsboro Intermediate Students Celebrate New Playground
HILLSBORO, Mo. — After years of planning, fundraising, and anticipation, students at Hillsboro Intermediate School are finally enjoying their brand-new playground, officially opened for use at the beginning of October.
The new play area, which includes swings, an obstacle course, and a GaGa Ball pit, represents a little more than $200,000 investment in outdoor recreation and student wellness. The project was approved by the Hillsboro R-3 Board of Education in February following strong advocacy from students and teachers.
“Last year, we had fourth grade join our building,” said Principal Leslie Marchetti. “With the addition, we really knew that we needed to work even harder on getting that playground.”
Fifth-grade students played a key role in making the project a reality—several presented persuasive essays before the school board to advocate for the playground. Students, staff, and community members collectively raised more than $20,000 toward the total cost, with the remainder funded through district funds and a grant.
Today, nearly 700 students in grades 4–6 have access to the new equipment. Alongside the new installations, existing four-square, kickball, and basketball courts remain part of the expanded recreational area.
