4 Things to know from the counselor's office. October 2nd until October 16th edition

October is here, and there is plenty happening at Hillsboro High School. From planning for life after graduation to a little incentive for showing up and doing the right things, the HHS Counseling Office has several important dates and opportunities coming up.

As always, you can take a deeper dive into the newsletter right here.

Here are four things students and families should have on their radar.

Sophomore Parent Night is October 6th

Parents of sophomores will want to make plans to attend Sophomore Parent Night on Tuesday, October 6th, at 6 p.m. in the HHS Theatre.

There is a lot to start thinking about during the sophomore year. Counselors will talk about Area Technical School programs, dual credit options, A+, college campus visits, ACT dates and registration deadlines, early graduation, NCAA information and more.

Need Help With the FAFSA? Come See Us October 27th

Completing the FAFSA can be confusing, especially if you've never done it before. That's why HHS counselors and a representative from Scholarship Foundation STL will be available to help families through the process.

FAFSA Night begins at 6 p.m. Tuesday, October 27th, in the Hillsboro Intermediate Board Room. Families should bring their own computer.

The FAFSA is required for students using A+ or taking out grants or loans, so this is an important night for many of our seniors and their families.

Students Have Something to Work Toward

Good attendance, good grades and good choices could lead to a little fun at The Farm on October 27th.

HHS is planning an Attendance Incentive Day featuring games, prizes and food and drink trucks. To participate, students must have at least 90% attendance, no F's, no lunch or after-school detentions, and no ISS or OSS during the eligibility period.

College and Career Opportunities Are Coming to HHS

Students don't always have to travel somewhere to learn about their options after high school. Sometimes those opportunities come directly to them.

During October, HHS is scheduled to welcome representatives from Duke University, UMSL, Mizzou, the Electricians Union, Missouri State University, Washington University and Missouri Baptist University.

There are also college field trips planned for November 11, including a visit to State Technical College and another trip involving Missouri Baptist University, Maryville University and Lindenwood University.

And that's just part of what's happening. The latest HHS Counseling Office Newsletter also includes information about scholarships, ACT dates, community resources, upcoming events and more. Students and families are encouraged to take a few minutes to look through it and make sure they aren't missing an opportunity.
