Director of School Safety Hired. His name is Nino J. Dicandia

The Hillsboro R-3 School District has taken another step in strengthening school safety by welcoming veteran law enforcement leader Nino J. Dicandia as its new Director of School Safety.

Approved by the Hillsboro R-3 Board of Education during its June 25 meeting, Dicandia officially began his new role on July 8. He will oversee the district's newly established School Safety Officer program while leading safety and emergency preparedness efforts across all Hillsboro R-3 schools.

The position is part of the district's continued commitment to providing safe, secure, and welcoming learning environments for students, staff, and visitors.

"Nothing is more important than the safety of our students and staff," Superintendent Dr. Jon Isaacson said. "Mr. Dicandia's depth of experience, leadership, and commitment to service make him an outstanding fit for this role. His work will strengthen our ability to prepare, respond, and partner with local agencies to ensure our schools remain safe and welcoming places for every student."

A Lifetime of Protecting Others

Dicandia brings more than 30 years of experience in law enforcement and enterprise security to Hillsboro R-3.

He spent 26 years with the St. Louis County Police Department, serving as a corporal, detective, crisis intervention officer, and field training instructor. During his distinguished career, he earned both the Medal of Valor and the Distinguished Service Citation for his service.

Most recently, Dicandia managed security operations involving close to 300 security officers. His experience includes active intruder response, emergency preparedness, crisis planning, and coordinating large-scale training exercises involving multiple public safety agencies.

Building a Safer Future

As Director of School Safety, Dicandia will oversee district-wide safety initiatives, supervise Hillsboro R-3's School Safety Officers, coordinate emergency preparedness planning and training, collaborate with local law enforcement and first responders, and help implement safety goals outlined in the District Comprehensive School Improvement Plan.

"I am honored to join Hillsboro R-3 as Director of School Safety," Dicandia said. "With more than 30 years of experience in law enforcement and security leadership, I am committed to building a proactive and accountable safety program that protects students and staff. My goal is to work alongside our administrators, employees, families, and community partners to ensure every school remains a safe and welcoming place to learn."

A Safety Presence in Every School

Under the district's comprehensive School Safety Officer program, one full-time School Safety Officer will be assigned to each Hillsboro R-3 school. The program is designed to provide a consistent and visible safety presence while strengthening campus supervision, visitor management, emergency preparedness, and coordination with local law enforcement and first responders.

District leaders say the investment reflects Hillsboro R-3's ongoing commitment to taking proactive steps to protect students and employees while creating an environment where learning can thrive.
