High school families, we know your inbox is full.
Between emails, texts, announcements, activities and everything else happening during the school year, it can be difficult to keep track of every opportunity and deadline.
So, we went through the latest Hillsboro High School Counseling Office newsletter for you. Here are four things parents and students should have on their radar right now. If you would like a detailed view of what's happening in the newsletter, please click here.
1. Senior families, circle September 15
If you have a senior, this is one meeting you'll want on your calendar.
Senior Parent Information Night is Tuesday, September 15, at 6 p.m. in the Hillsboro High School Theatre. The Counseling Department, senior class sponsors and A+ coordinator will cover graduation requirements, important senior-year dates and deadlines, scholarships, financial aid and FAFSA, the A+ Program and the Parent Communication App.
In other words, if you've been wondering, "What do we need to be doing during senior year?" this is a good place to start.
2. College Fair brings 50+ schools together in one place 🎓
Students thinking about college have a big opportunity coming Thursday, September 17.
Hillsboro High School students can attend the College Fair at Jefferson College, where representatives from more than 50 colleges and universities are expected.
Students can explore schools, majors and careers while talking directly with college representatives. The bus is scheduled to leave HHS at 8:30 a.m. and return around 10 a.m. Students need to have a parent sign them up through Infinite Campus.
And college representatives are coming to HHS, too. UMSL is scheduled to visit during lunch shifts on October 7, followed by Washington University on October 21 at 1 p.m.
3. ACT deadline approaching
Here's a date that's easy to miss: September 11.
That's the registration deadline for the October 17 ACT. The next ACT listed in the Counseling Office newsletter is December 12, with a November 6 registration deadline.
If the ACT is part of your student's postsecondary plan, don't let that September 11 deadline sneak up on you.
4. Don't overlook scholarships and career opportunities
The Counseling Office maintains a scholarship spreadsheet and adds new opportunities as they are received. Students can also find scholarship information through their Google Classroom and morning announcements, and paper copies are available in the Counseling Office.
And not every opportunity is centered on a four-year university.
Manufacturing Day at Jefferson College is October 2 and will give students an opportunity to explore careers through hands-on tours in Welding, Precision Machining Technology and HVAC, along with opportunities to connect with local employers. Jefferson College's Health Care Career Day follows on October 15.
One more thing: Save these dates
Junior Parent Night is September 22 from 6-8 p.m., Homecoming is September 25 with a three-hour early dismissal, the Homecoming Dance is September 26 at 7 p.m., and Sophomore Parent Night is October 6 from 6-8 p.m.
There's a lot happening at Hillsboro High School, but you don't have to remember it all at once.
For now, talk with your student about these four things and make sure the dates that matter to your family make it onto the calendar.
